John Dillinger, second from the right, was a small-time crook, unnoticed by the FBI until a bank robbery gone wrong ended up in the murder of a police officer. Dubbed Public Enemy Number 1, Dillinger wasted no time in flaunting his new calling card. In the picture above, Dillinger is shown at his trial, his right wrist handcuffed to a police officer's to prevent him from escape. Even with the additional security, John Dillinger still managed to escape from the supposedly unescapable prison using a fake gun he carved out of wood. This picture was taken minutes before he escaped from the prison without a hitch.
